LE Mans, France — Peugeot continued it’s impressive string of qualifying wins at the Circuit du la Sarthe in the evening qualifying session and the French Lion will hold the top three positions on the grid when they drop the green flag on the race Saturday at 3 pm (+1 GMT).
The French team showed no signs of slowing down and the Audis showed no sign of getting faster during the evening session though one report indicated that when the teams were running together in racing trim both were turning laps in the 3:26-27 range.
This is one time when it would be worthwhile to be a fly on the wall in either of the two teams’ garage as you have to wonder if the Audis are once again playing possum like they seemed to do last year — until the green flag dropped and they left the Peugeots in their slipstream.
It has not been a perfect day for Team Peugeot as the No. 9 car suffered significant damage in a shunt during the first session. The Peugeot Team will be working at a feverish pace to see if they get the car back together in time for the start on Saturday. This is the second car that they have had to rebuild in the last two weeks.
Team Audi suffered another hit in the evening session when the Charouz Racing Team, an Aston-Martin powered Lola chassis earned the sixth spot on the starting grid by .131 seconds over the No. 1 Audi.
In LM P2 it was the two Porsche Spyder RS2s trading places from the first session while Corvette Team held serve in the evening session for the GT1 pole position.
But the Saleen S7R of the Larbre Competition Team surprised many with its performance in the evening session as drivers BOUCHUT CH./BORNHAUSER P./SMET D. aced the second Vette by nearly a second and was just a hair away from taking the pole position from last year’s second place finisher in the GT1 class.
In GT2 it was American Patrick Long in the Imsa Performance Matmut Porsche 997 GT3 RSR setting the field on its ear as he toured the famed course in the time of 3:58.152 to earn the pole position and in the process breaking last year’s track record for the class by more than six seconds.
