Rain can’t dampen qualifying efforts at Lime Rock

LAKEVIEW, Cn — While mother nature played havoc with the racing surface at Lime Rock park Friday afternoon, David Brabham was up to his old tricks as he captured Patrón Highcroft Racing’s third pole position of the ALMS season.

With steady rain falling at Lime Rock throughout the day, Brabham and teammate Simon Pagenaud were second fastest in both practice sessions aboard the Honda Performance Development factory-backed ARX-01c.  But when it came time to “dance in the rain”, Brabham was up to the challenge touring the course in 0:0:58.106 for a new quyalifying lap record at almost a 93 mph average.

The times was not only good for the pole but more than a half-second faster than the number two Porsche RS Spyder and nearly two seconds ahead of the third fastest qualifier the Mazda Lola. In fourth place on the grid is the Drayson Lola Judd who were just a tick of the clock behind the Mazda.

On a dry track on Saturday morning showed the fans just how fast the Honda is slicing eight seconds off his qualifying time with a 0:50.700 lap at 106 mph. However, Team Drayson driver Jonny Cocker in the Lola Judd was a blink-of-the-eye behind, just 0.035 seconds off the leader’s pace.

Patrick Long took the Porsche 911 RSR to front of the GT class with a best lap of 1:03.904  or 84.502 mph. He was followed by another Porsche and the Ferarri of Jaimie Mello who clocked in nearly half a second off Long’s pace. Saturday morning, however, it was the BMWs of the Rahal-Letterman stable that led the practice session on the dry track while the pole setting Porsche was third, three tenths of a second off the time driven by Long.

Audi Sweeps Le Mans with fourth 1, 2, 3 Finish

LE MANS, France —  Three years ago, Mike Rockenfeller crashed out of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race at the Tertre Rouge corner, in what he described was the worst day of his life. After the Peugeot dominated qualifying, virtually no one expected that the Audi Team would take its third One, Two, Three win at Le Mans in 2010.

But with Rockenfeller atoning for the awful day at Tertre Rouge with a splendid drive, he and co-drivers Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas kept their Audi R15 in the hunt until one-by-one the Peugeots self-destructed and the the vindication for not only that crash but for a year of losing to their chief rival was complete.

In a little bit of the Tortoise and the Hare strategy,  the Audi Team never gave up running its own race, even after the no. 7 car driven by Tom Kristensen was punted off of the Circuit de la Sarthe early on, by the no. 79 BMW M3 E92 “Art Car”.  The team refused to give up, with some help from the Audi R15 Plus, in which all three cars had zero mechanical problems.

Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, the head of Audi Motorsport, has said, “This is the hardest race that we have ever won”, and added that they were going to invite the Peugeot team to the post race party tonight, and he was sure that they would come.

Peugeot did not appear to run near their full race speed during the event, and there is supposition that the team knew there was a problem with the car early on. One only has to go back to that race three years ago when two of three Peugeot’s went out with mechanical issues. Last year the Peugeot Team won without really having any pressure from the Audi Team, who were sorting out the new R15 chassis.

For Peugeot, it was an exasperating 24 hours that started with great expectations and ended in the agony of defeat with nary a one of the four cars entering finishing,

no. 009 Aston Martin Racing Lola B09/60 has blown its engine in the final hour

Aston Martin Lola B09

Le Mans, France – With just under an hour to go in the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans, the engine on the no. 009 Aston Martin Lola has let go, with a James Bond style smoke screen and oil slick. The car was being driven by Sam Hancock, and right by the Indianapolis turns, the engine let go, and the driver pulled off of the track, ending his 4th place hopes and retiring the best placed gasoline powered car.  The 007 Aston Martin Lola is currently running in seventh position, and will most likely end the race in sixth position unless something drastic happens.
