6 hours completed in the 2011 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans

#8 Peugeot 908

9:00 PM Le Mans, France With 6 hours of racing completed, one hour of which was run under full course yellow flag, the first 5 cars are separated by a little over a minute. Audi is down to two R18’s after the #3 car being driven by Allan McNish collected the Luxury Racing Ferrari 458 Italia, near “The Esses”. The crash was one of the most violent crashes I have seen, almost flipping over the Armco barrier and into a group of photographers. Surprisingly nobody was injured and Allan is back at the track after being thoroughly checked out by doctors at a hospital in Le Mans.

The #7 Peugeot 908 and #2 Audi R18 have been swapping the lead on and off, with the Audi being able to go at a quicker speed, while the Peugeots can go for an extra lap before refueling.

With 14 Laps done, #3 Audi R18 collected #58 Luxury Racing Ferrari 458 Italia and is totalled

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2Nb0Ienv6k

With only 14 laps into the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans the #3 Audi R18 TDI while trying to pass slower cars hit one of the #58 Luxury Racing Ferrari 458 Italia driven by Anthony Beltoise and wrecked hard across the safety gravel at the The Esses, and into the Armco tire barrier launching carbon fiber bodywork and other parts into a group of photographers. None were injured thankfully!. The car rolled onto its roof after hitting the wall and Allan McNish was trapped inside the car, but ok. Safety workers had to roll the wrecked car over before Allan could get out visibly shaken but appearing ok under his own power.

Update: Allan McNish has been checked out at the track medical facility and has been deemed ok, they are taking him to the hospital as a precaution for some further in-depth checks.

Update: Allan McNish has been cleared by Audi Doctors, Le Mans trackside doctors, as well as the Hospital in Le Mans where he was taken for more in-depth checks. He was at the hospital, joined by his wife Kelly, and has returned to the track.

As the French Tri-Color drops, the longest sprint race has started: 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans

Start of 2011 24 Hours of Le Man

3:00 PM Le Mans, France, the FIA President Jean Todt dropped the French Tri-Color to start the 79th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Both Audi R18 and Peugeot 908’s are off at a blistering race pace, which looks to be much faster than the petrol powered P1 prototypes. R18 # driven by Benoit Treluyer is currently leading the race, with Timo Bernhard in the #1 Audi R18 in second. The #7 and #9 Peugeot 908’s chase close behind to the Audi R18s with #3 Audi R18 driven by Allan McNish chasing them down
