18 Hours completed and still too close to call.

With 18 hour completed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it is still a neck and neck race. Currently there is a 30 second spread between the R18 TDI being driven by Benoit Treluyer and the 2nd position Peugeot 908 driven by Staphane Pagenaud and the 3rd position 908 driven by Alex Wurz. The Audi R18 is due in to pit momentarily and will probably take on fuel and tires.

At the half way mark #2 Audi R18 leads with Peugeot close behind

3:00 AM Sunday Le Mans France. The 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans is officially half over, the one remaining Audi R18 TDI is still topping the leader board with the 3 factory Peugeot’s close on their heels. The race has had some of the closest racing we have seen in the last 5 years, as well as some of the most terrifying moments in recent history with the 2 Audi R18’s crashing badly in separate incidents. One can only imagine how bad things would have been if Audi was still running a open top car.

As the French Tri-Color drops, the longest sprint race has started: 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans

Start of 2011 24 Hours of Le Man

3:00 PM Le Mans, France, the FIA President Jean Todt dropped the French Tri-Color to start the 79th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Both Audi R18 and Peugeot 908’s are off at a blistering race pace, which looks to be much faster than the petrol powered P1 prototypes. R18 # driven by Benoit Treluyer is currently leading the race, with Timo Bernhard in the #1 Audi R18 in second. The #7 and #9 Peugeot 908’s chase close behind to the Audi R18s with #3 Audi R18 driven by Allan McNish chasing them down
